The Artisan’s Promise

A journey from legacy to legacy

One quiet evening, I was sitting on my couch, resting against a floral block-printed cushion. On the wall in front of me hung a blue pottery plate, glowing under the warm light. Both pieces carried the essence of our craft and the hands that shaped them artisans I had known since childhood.

Yet as I scrolled through online marketplaces, I felt a deep unease. Words like “hand print” were being used for imitations of hand-block printing, and mass-produced Khurja clayware was being sold as Jaipur blue pottery at a fraction of the cost. Customers were paying for deception, and the real artisans were being erased from the story.

That moment of frustration became the turning point. Despite decades of working in the B2B export world, I realized I could no longer stay silent. I had to create something that would honor my late father’s vision, restore dignity to artisans, and bring authenticity to customers worldwide. That decision gave birth to Artisan’s Touch a platform built on truth, stories, and a promise.

Our Roots

Our story begins with my late father, Madan Doraya. From the very first day he set up our factory in 1972 alongside his brothers and the artisans he so deeply respected he was clear: every artisan would be fairly paid, treated with dignity, and given a safe and secure work environment.

For him, this was never just about business. It was about building a community where artisans were honored for their skill, where good ergonomics and safe working conditions were the norm, and where education and a true sense of belonging were woven into the very fabric of the workplace. From day one, the factory was not just a place of production it was a place of respect, learning, and pride.

In those early years, artisans were treated with dignity. Their craft was celebrated, and their skill was valued. But as the market expanded, the reality outside our walls began to change. Across Rajasthan and beyond, artisans’ status deteriorated. Many were exploited by employers who deliberately pushed them toward alcoholism, making them dependent and vulnerable. It was a cruel cycle that stripped artisans of both respect and opportunity.

My father, however, refused to accept this reality. He did everything in his power to resist it. He stretched the limits of his own factory, creating larger requirements and increasing production capacity not for the sake of profit, but to employ more artisans, to sustain more families, to give dignity back where the world was taking it away. For him, this was never just business it was a mission.

Two Sons, Two Paths

My father’s legacy shaped both his sons in unique ways.

My younger brother pursued engineering, driven by precision and innovation, while I became a Chartered Financial Analyst, immersed in strategy, exports, and global markets. For years, I worked behind the curtain of our family business, building relationships in the Buyer-to-Buyer (B2B) format. Finance was my profession, but handicrafts were in my blood.

From childhood, I spent countless hours in our factory, mesmerized by the artisans’ weathered hands moving with practiced grace dipping blocks into dyes, pressing them onto fabric, chiseling wooden blocks, and shaping pottery with patience. Alongside this beauty, I also witnessed the disparity: artisans’ skill was priceless, yet the wider market paid them meager wages.

It was here, amid the sounds of chisels and the scent of indigo, that I quietly made a promise to one day restore their true value.

Carrying the Mantle

When my father passed away, the weight of his promise became mine. I remembered his frustration with the flood of cheap imitations that betrayed the sanctity of hand-block printing. These mass-produced “hand prints” were not just damaging the market; they were dishonoring generations of tradition.

As I visited artisan villages, I saw the weariness in their eyes. Their craft remained as graceful as ever, but poverty, poor health, and a lack of recognition dulled their spirits. I felt my father’s absence most deeply in those moments.

One evening, looking at the cushion and blue pottery plate at home, and then back at the deceptive products being sold online, I knew what had to be done. I would not fight this deception quietly I would create a platform that exposed the truth and celebrated artisans for who they really are.

The Birth of Artisan’s Touch

Artisan’s Touch was born from that conviction. It is not just an online store it is a living gallery of stories. Every product carries the soul of the artisan who created it. A cushion is never just a cushion; a vase is never just a vase. Through our platform, we bring customers closer to the story, skill, and passion behind every creation.

With Artisan’s Touch, we have made a conscious choice to continue my father’s mission in a modern, global context:

·         Fair Wages & Direct Employment – eliminating middlemen exploitation and ensuring artisans are respected and rewarded

·         Sustainable & Eco-Friendly Practices  Azo-free dyes, mindful processes, and products crafted with care

·         Community Empowerment – health, wellness, and educational initiatives that uplift artisan families and the next generation

·         Authenticity & Transparency – educating customers on hand-block printing, blue pottery, and the value of true craftsmanship

We aren’t just selling products online. We are fostering a conscious marketplace where every purchase supports sustainable livelihoods, preserves heritage crafts, and strengthens artisan communities. The true “special ingredient” in every product is the dignity, skill, and story of the artisan who made it- a story we proudly share with the world.

Our Promise

Today, Artisan’s Touch stands as a tribute to my father’s vision and a bridge between generations. Where he championed artisans with his presence, I amplify their voices through digital storytelling. Where my training as a CFA taught me to measure value in numbers, I now measure it in dignity, respect, and legacy.

We proved that a promise made by one generation can indeed be fulfilled by the next strengthened, reshaped, and passed on, just like the crafts we hold so dear.

This is not just our brand story. It is a living promise.
